Poetry Tree tour of Mayo

To celebrate All Ireland Poetry Day which happened in October, Mayo County Council’s arts office, library service, and Mayo Artsquad put out a call for submissions of inspiring poetry to dress a poetry tree designed by Artsquad artist Louisa Sloan. There was a great response to the call for poetry with some 160 submissions received to date. Poetry was received from primary and secondary school students, Active Retirement Associations, care settings, and writers groups.

Applications sought for recording and amateur drama grants

Mayo County Council is currently taking applications for two arts grants, the Music Recording Assistance Award and the Amateur Drama Award. The recording grant was established to support the recording of original music by musicians living in Mayo. The recipients of this award will receive up to €800 towards an original music recording. There will be up to a maximum of two awards made in 2012, and the amount awarded will be decided by an independent expert assessment panel.

Culture Night 2012 — free cultural events across Mayo

On Friday September 21, locals and visitors to Mayo will enjoy the special experience of Culture Night, a free night of cultural exploration and excitement in 22 venues across the county. Museums, galleries, historic houses, artists’ studios and cultural groups will keep their doors open late into the evening welcoming people of all ages to taste and sample their cultural delights for free on the evening.

Plans for Culture Night 2012 well underway

Culture Night 2012 will take place on September 21 this year and plans are afoot to make the night an unforgettable cultural experience for Mayo audiences. Cultural organisations and groups are busily preparing varied programmes of activity for the evening. Mayo has been participating since 2009 and was Ireland’s first countywide Culture Night programme.

Two visual artists win Mayo County Council bursaries

Two Tyrone Guthrie bursaries from Mayo County Council have been awarded to visual artists Mary Noonan and Will O’Kane. Every year Mayo County Council offers two bursary awards to artists born or living in Mayo, to enable them to spend two weeks at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig, County Monaghan. Each bursary covers all board and lodging expenses for a two-week period, plus the use of a studio if relevant.
